Mobile stations in Mainz

The new mobility stations in Mainz bring different mobility options together in one place and make it easy and convenient to switch between them. This makes sustainable mobility more tangible and easier to use in everyday life.

The state capital of Mainz is sending a strong signal in support of climate-friendly and flexible mobility: New mobility hubs have recently been set up at four central locations. They connect various modes of transportation—such as buses, trains, car-sharing, the meinRad bike-sharing system, and e-scooters—all in one place. Mobility hubs are clearly marked connection points in public spaces. Depending on the location, they offer various modes of transportation and mobility services.

“Many people in Mainz already use various modes of transportation as a matter of course and combine them depending on the route. With the mobility stations, we are specifically addressing this trend and providing support where it is particularly relevant in everyday life. This further strengthens the integration of the various services and makes them more reliable,” explains Janina Steinkrüger, Head of the Mobility Department.

The mobility stations make everyday life easier through:

  • Visibility: Finding options faster, including through additional digital information about the services (via QR code)
  • Flexibility: Easily switching between bike, car, and train
  • Order: Dedicated spots for sharing services free up sidewalks and create short distances between transportation options
  • Climate protection: For climate-friendly mobility in Mainz

The first mobility stations are located at the Roman Theater, on Heugasse, Holzstraße, and Bonifaziusstraße.

A joint working group consisting of city administration and Mainzer Mobilität developed the concept and design. The three-meter-tall azure-blue stele serves as a landmark and shows at a glance which options are available on-site.

Each mobility station also features a unique QR code that links to Mainzer Mobilität’s mobility planner—with a station overview on the map and direct navigation to the individual services.

“Our value proposition at the mobility stations is clear: this is where mobility comes together. Traditional public transit and smart sharing services. But also e-mobility and other service options. We have succeeded in integrating the steles clearly into the existing urban landscape. The design is robust yet delicate,” adds Florian Wiesemann, Managing Director of Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft.
