Real estate surveying includes, for example, subdivision surveys, boundary determinations, and building surveys. These are often referred to as cadastral surveys.

The Rheinhessen Surveying and Cadastral Office or publicly appointed surveyors (ÖbVI) in Rhineland-Palatinate are responsible for conducting real estate surveys on private properties in Mainz.

The Surveying and Geoinformation Department of the Building Authority is responsible for property surveys on municipal land. It is also responsible for property surveys in connection with land sales or purchases involving the City of Mainz or city-owned companies.
