Through a three-year training program with us, you will learn the profession of “plant firefighter,” which opens the door to subsequent employment as a professional firefighter with us. The training can begin immediately after you successfully complete high school and does not require any prior training.

The first part of the training program includes basic technical training in areas such as metalwork, electrical systems, plumbing, HVAC, and woodworking. At the same time, you will obtain—if you do not already have them—a Class B driver’s license (passenger car) and a Class C driver’s license (truck). The second part focuses on firefighting and emergency medical services training; you will also gain your first operational experience through internships. The training takes place both at the Mainz Professional Fire Department and at other training locations in the Rhine-Main region.

Upon successful completion of the training program, provided you meet the personal and civil service eligibility requirements, you will be hired as an emergency responder with the Mainz Professional Fire Department as a civil servant.

As a plant firefighter, you will typically work shifts (currently 24-hour shifts). During emergency operations, you will work on a rescue and firefighting vehicle or a specialized vehicle—for example, extinguishing fires, rescuing people and animals, or providing technical assistance. Outside of emergency operations, in addition to regular training and continuing education, you will work in one of the fire department’s workshops or specialized units.

Upon completion of your training, if you are deemed suitable, you will be hired as a firefighter with the Mainz Professional Fire Department in a civil service capacity as a fire captain. You will then have the opportunity to pursue further training within the fire department, which may include assuming leadership responsibilities and advancing in your career. These may include training as a firefighter diver, boat operator, dispatch center dispatcher, or squad leader, among other roles.
