The office is responsible for the financial affairs of the state capital Mainz. This includes, in particular, drawing up and managing the budget, setting municipal taxes, processing payments, and accounting.

Other tasks include the management and controlling of municipal investments, the administration of central financial software, and the implementation of procurement procedures. The sports administration is also assigned to the office.
