Department V - Environment and Mobility
Welcome to the Department of Environment and Mobility!
The Department of Environment and Mobility is responsible for the following:
- The City Planning Office, comprising a total of three divisions, is part of the Department of Mobility.
This includes the Transportation Division, which is responsible for transportation planning and for ensuring that tomorrow’s mobility is future-proof and attractive for everyone. Whether on foot, by bike, by car, or via eco-friendly transportation. This includes, for example, projects such as the development of the SUMP, a mobility plan for Mainz. The Traffic Engineering division oversees, among other things, traffic signal systems, the compilation of traffic data, the parking guidance system, and parking meters.
The Road Operations Department is responsible for the maintenance of city streets as well as civil engineering projects. They monitor the road infrastructure of the state capital Mainz to ensure it remains in proper, functional, and traffic-safe condition for everyone. This also includes civil engineering structures (bridge construction).
The Road Traffic Authority is responsible for road closures of any kind within the traffic area and is tasked with ensuring traffic safety. Construction site management accounts for a large part of the planning and coordination. This department handles the issuance of resident parking permits, parking accommodations for people with severe disabilities, bollards, markings, and signs.
- The Parks and Environment Office, which oversees environmental planning, nature and species conservation, landscape management, pollution control, environmental information, climate protection and adaptation, energy consulting, open space and property planning, environmental regulations, park maintenance, and tree care, as well as technical services—including the fountain maintenance crew and playground inspections—and is responsible for the Mainz Wildlife Park.
- The City Cleaning Department (Office 70), responsible for street cleaning
- The Municipal Waste Management of Mainz and Mainz-Bingen (public-law institution), responsible for waste disposal
- The Wirtschaftsbetrieb Mainz (public-law institution), responsible for drainage and cemetery services.
The responsibilities of the Department of Environment and Mobility thus span key areas such as environmental and species protection, pollution control, climate protection and climate adaptation, open space design and green space maintenance, as well as traffic planning, maintenance and redesign of streets and squares, and street cleaning, waste disposal, drainage, and cemetery services.
The Department of Environment and Mobility also handles cross-cutting issues; for example, this includes the Aircraft Noise Commission, participation in the AGFFK, and cooperation with the MVG.
