The department is responsible for landscape development, landscape protection and nature and species conservation. It supports planning in the urban area, coordinates environmental impacts and, as the nature conservation authority, ensures compliance with the law. By maintaining compensation and biotope areas, it contributes to the protection of nature in Mainz.
