Every dog owner is required to register their dog.
The registration requirement is specified in detail in the respective municipal ordinance, as is the determination of the dog license fee.
Registration of the dog is required, among other things,
- for dogs older than three months. They must be identified by a transponder with an identification number
- when acquiring a new dog or moving to a new residence with a dog
- when fostering or boarding a dog for a period specified in the local dog tax ordinances
Please note that more detailed and supplementary regulations apply to the ownership of so-called dangerous dogs.
Dog license tags are issued after the dog has been registered. The dog license tag must be carried and presented upon request.
In addition, all dog owners are required to keep their dogs on a leash on public roads within a town or in areas that are not visible. Outside of a town, dogs must be put on a leash immediately if other people approach or become visible.
Violations of the state law on dangerous dogs (LHundeG) can be punished with a fine of up to ten thousand euros. In addition, violations of municipal statutes can also be punished.
