If your name has changed, for example due to marriage, you must notify the vehicle registration authority of this change and have the vehicle documents amended.
Name changes in the vehicle documents, including in combination with address changes, can only be made at the vehicle registration authority. In this case, the vehicle registration certificate or registration certificate part I and the vehicle title or registration certificate part II must be changed to your new name and address. Upon presentation of the old vehicle documents (vehicle registration certificate and title), it is mandatory to switch to the new vehicle documents (registration certificate parts I and II).
Please note: If the vehicle was previously registered in another registration district and is to be registered in Mainz with the same license plate number, this is considered a transfer of ownership.

Please note the following requirements:
- The owner of the vehicle has their primary residence in Mainz.
- The company headquarters or branch office is located in Mainz.
- If the name change affects the legal form, it is no longer a name change within the meaning of this service, but a re-registration of the vehicle.
- Relocation within Mainz, if applicable
- The vehicle has a valid general inspection.
- If the vehicle is financed or leased, the registration certificate part II is usually held by the bank or leasing company.
- In this case, the vehicle owner must arrange for the registration certificate part II to be sent to the vehicle registration authority for the necessary change.
Outstanding fees at the registration authority
The change to the vehicle documents is dependent on you having paid all outstanding fees incurred in connection with the registration. You can pay any outstanding fees on site as part of the change process.
Usually immediately upon arrival; waiting time depends on how busy it is.
