M for Future - My Tram City Subproject 2 - City Center

Map of Mainz Neustadt with marked area

Brief description

On June 3, 2020, the city council passed a resolution to further expand the tram network in Mainz. New routes are to be examined, planned, and implemented for the further development of the Mainz tram network. Comprehensive public participation is to accompany the planning of the specific tram projects. The project is divided into the following subprojects:

  • Subproject 1 – Binger Straße
Closing the gap between Alicenplatz and Münsterplatz
  • Subproject 2 – City center
With development of Neustadt and central development of the old town (including Höfchen)
  • Subproject 3 – Connection to the Heiligkreuz district
Connection of the new Heiligkreuz district and parts of the upper town, Weisenau, and Hechtsheim-Ost, as well as connection to the university hospital
  • Long-term development of the tram network, including possible connections to the surrounding Rhine-Hesse region (measure not yet started)

As part of subproject 2, the Mainz city administration and Mainzer Mobilität are planning a new tram line from Schillerplatz via Höfchen towards Mainz Neustadt. This will connect the old town more directly with Mainz Neustadt, the most populous district of Mainz. At the same time, the new route in the city center will increase the resilience of the network.

Citizen participation

All citizens were able to contribute their comments and suggestions through various participation opportunities. It was ensured that the objections heard at the events were passed on to the planning table and that these questions and comments were dealt with seriously. Each suggestion and concern was examined individually to determine how it should be handled. In other words, it was examined which interests could be pursued and incorporated into the planning and which could not. In the latter case, the reasons were explained in a comprehensible manner.

Multi-stage participation formats took place in the various sub-projects:

  1. Kick-off event
  2. Online participation
  3. Theme market
  4. Theme workshops
  5. Interest advisory board
  6. Closing event

Last but not least, there is also the legally required public participation in the course of the planning approval process. All planning documents, including expert opinions and reports, will be published there, and private, public, and nature conservation issues will be weighed against the impact of the project.

Total duration: approximately 24 months; dates will be announced on the Mainz Mobility project page (opens in a new tab).
