Brief description

On June 3, 2020, the City Council passed a resolution to further expand the tram network in Mainz. To further develop the Mainz tram network, new routes are to be evaluated, planned, and implemented. Comprehensive public participation is to take place in conjunction with the planning of each specific tram project. The project is divided into the following subprojects:

  • Subproject 1 – Binger Straße: Closing
the gap between Alicenplatz and Münsterplatz
  • Subproject 2 – Downtown,
including access to Neustadt and central access to the Old Town (including Höfchen)
  • Subproject 3 – Connection to the Heiligkreuz District and University Hospital
: Connection of the new Heiligkreuz District and parts of the Upper Town, Weisenau, and Hechtsheim-Ost, as well as the connection to the University Hospital
  • Long-term expansion of the tram network, including potential connections to the surrounding areas of Rheinhessen (work has not yet begun)

As part of Subproject 2, the City of Mainz and Mainzer Mobilität are planning a new tram line from Schillerplatz via Höfchen toward Mainzer Neustadt. This line is intended to provide a more direct connection between the Old Town and Mainz’s most populous district, Mainzer Neustadt, in the future.

Citizen participation

Through various opportunities for public participation, all residents were able to share their comments and suggestions. Measures were taken to ensure that the objections raised at the events were forwarded to the planning team and that these questions and comments were taken seriously. Each suggestion and concern was reviewed individually to determine how it should be addressed. This meant assessing which interests could be pursued and incorporated into the planning and which could not. In such cases, a clear explanation was provided as to why.

Multi-stage participation formats took place in the various subprojects:

  1. Kickoff event
  2. Online participation
  3. Theme market
  4. Thematic workshops
  5. Advisory Board
  6. Closing event

In addition, there is the legally required public participation process as part of the planning approval procedure. During this process, all planning documents, including expert opinions and reports, will be published, and private, public, and nature conservation concerns will be weighed against the project’s impacts.

Total duration: approximately 24 months; dates will be announced on the Mainzer Mobilität project page (opens in a new tab).
