Vehicle: Change vehicle data or owner data
Online services
If the vehicle data or owner data for your vehicle has changed, you must report this to your registration authority.
What do I need to know?
Service description
If the owner details or vehicle details of your car, motorcycle, or trailer change, you must notify your local vehicle registration authority.
Owner details change when you change your name, for example due to marriage. You must also notify the registration authority of any change of address when you move house.
Technical data changes, for example, in the event of:
- Changes to the vehicle class
- Changes in engine displacement, rated power, fuel type, or energy source
- Increase in the maximum speed determined by the type of construction
- Reduction in the maximum design speed if this is relevant to the driver's license or registration
- Changes to the permissible axle loads, total mass, support load, or towing capacity
- Increase in vehicle dimensions, except for passenger cars and motorcycles
- Change in the number of seats or standing room in buses
- Changes to exhaust or noise levels, if these affect motor vehicle tax or traffic restrictions
- Changes to the vehicle
Depending on the change, the registration authority will issue you with
- new registration documents and
- new stamp stickers for your vehicle if the license plate number changes.
You can visit your registration authority in person or appoint a representative.
The owner data is also entered in the registration certificate Part II. Therefore, you must have any name changes entered there, for example. Furthermore, you are obliged to report any technical changes to the vehicle that alter the EC vehicle class, displacement, rated power, fuel type, or energy source.
When de-registering, re-registering, or changing the type of license plate, the official license plates must be invalidated by the registration office by removing the official seal stickers.
Note:
When registering a vehicle that is still registered abroad, the foreign license plates must be presented.
In the event of theft or loss of a license plate, any remaining license plate must be presented.
Please note:
A vehicle with de-stamped license plates may only be operated on public roads in exceptional cases in connection with registration.
If an inspection or seal sticker becomes unusable or is lost (e.g., at a car wash), you should have it replaced immediately or have a new sticker affixed to avoid unnecessary trouble.
Prerequisites
- Your owner details or vehicle details have changed.
- You must not have any outstanding fees or expenses from previous registration procedures exceeding EUR 30.
- You must not have any vehicle tax debts of EUR 5 or more. This also includes late payment penalties, interest, and late fees.
In the event of technical modifications, the necessary expert reports must be submitted.
Procedure
Once the changes to your personal data or the technical specifications of the vehicle have been made, submit the data to be changed together with the necessary documents to the relevant authority. There, you will be issued with a new registration certificate, Part II, if necessary.
