Mainz, a Fair Trade City, starts the day with a fair trade breakfast in front of the World Shop
Tomorrow Can Change the World! On Saturday, September 19, 2026, the Mainz Fair Trade Team invites you to a fair trade breakfast at 10:00 a.m. in front of the Weltladen on Christofsstraße (55116 Mainz). “We want to start the day off right together with a fair breakfast,” says Sabine Gresch, who coordinates the Fair Trade campaign for the City of Mainz. With this breakfast, Mainz is once again sending a message—all interested residents are invited to the fair breakfast.
Many of the most popular breakfast items found on German tables cannot be grown here. They come from far away—from Africa, Asia, or Latin America: coffee, bananas, orange juice, cocoa, tea, and even honey. Those who choose fair-trade products for breakfast are also highlighting the most important criteria of fair trade. These include, among other things, the prohibition of illegal child labor and forced labor, the creation of humane working conditions, and guaranteed minimum prices.
With this public breakfast, the state capital is participating in Germany’s largest Fair Trade campaign week—Fair Trade Week 2026, whose theme is “Trade Fairly—Experience Diversity.” Diversity shapes our everyday lives. It is reflected in lifestyles, ideas, and perspectives. It enriches our shared lives because it opens up new perspectives and thus enables mutual learning.
Local initiatives and projects, such as the Mainz Social Urban Beekeeping Project—as well as supraregional initiatives and organizations—form the foundation that allows societies to function and continue to develop. But ecological crises, social inequality, exclusion, and the loss of democratic values are putting this diversity at risk. Many young people, in particular, experience these tensions firsthand and are looking for ways not only to defend diversity but also to actively embrace it.
Fair Trade Week invites us to discuss precisely this: What does it mean today to live out diversity? What challenges does this entail—and how can Fair Trade help ensure and strengthen diversity in the future? The nationwide Fair Trade Week has been underway since September 11 and runs through September 25.
“We look forward to welcoming our guests; breakfast will be served while supplies last. Foodsharing is contributing rescued baked goods. And perhaps our guests are curious about the work of the Fair Trade Team. It’s open to anyone who wants to get involved,” explains Sabine Gresch from the Agenda Office.
