Residence permit: Applying for parents and other family members to join you

You can apply for and extend your residence permit at this link.
Other family members of German citizens and foreign nationals living in Germany may be granted a residence permit on family grounds in cases of exceptional hardship. This allows them to join their family members in Germany and entitles them to engage in gainful employment.
“Other family members” refers to relatives who are not
children,
spouses, or
registered domestic partners.
Prerequisites
You meet the passport and visa requirements.
You have sufficient means to support yourself without relying on public funds.
There are no grounds for your deportation.
Your stay does not endanger or harm the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.
For family reunification with German citizens, additionally: The person you are joining must hold German citizenship and reside in Germany on a regular basis.
For family reunification with non-Germans, additionally: Your family member already living in Germany holds a
settlement permit,
a Long-Term Residence Permit (EC), or
residence permit and
sufficient living space.
There must be a particularly difficult situation, e.g., because the family members living here are dependent on your assistance due to a need for long-term care.

What else should I know?
Foreign nationals living in a family relationship with German citizens are, in most cases, granted a
settlement permit
after three years.
Foreign minors who
have grown up in Germany or
have entered the country as part of a child reunification program,
may also receive a settlement permit under simplified conditions.
The family reunification of family members of nationals of EU/EEA countries is governed by the Freedom of Movement Act/EU. This means:
Family members of EU/EEA nationals who are themselves nationals of an EU or EEA country may enter freely and engage in gainful employment.
Family members of EU/EEA nationals who are not themselves nationals of an EU or EEA country also have the right to enter and reside in the country.

For family reunification with German citizens, additionally: Proof of German citizenship and habitual residence in Germany for the person you are joining
For family reunification with non-German citizens, additionally:
Proof of the residence permit of your family member already living in Germany
Proof of adequate living space
Proof that there are exceptional circumstances

Depending on which additional requirements you must meet, the responsible authority may request additional documents.
How much does it cost and how can I pay?
Fees
Valid for up to one year: 100 euros
Valid for more than one year: 110 euros
Renewal for up to three months: 65 euros
Renewal for more than three months: 80 euros
Note:
You may be exempt from these fees only in exceptional cases.
