Apply for a passport
Online services
In many countries outside the European Union (EU), you need a passport to enter the country. As a German citizen, you can apply for a German passport.
It can be applied for by all age groups from birth and allows visa-free travel to over 170 countries.
What do I need to know?
Service description
A German passport allows you to enter over 170 countries worldwide as a tourist without a visa. You need a passport if you want to travel to countries outside the European Union (EU). If you have German citizenship, you can apply for a German passport.
The passport
- is recognized both within and outside the EU,
- has a chip, and
- can be applied for by persons of any age from birth.
Passport for children
Your child also needs a passport if you are planning a trip outside the EU.
Since January 1, 2024, child passports are no longer issued. You can apply for a regular passport for your child.
Does your child still have a valid child passport?
You can continue to use it until
- it expires
- the information is no longer correct
- the photo is no longer sufficient to clearly identify your child
Note: The child passport is no longer recognized by all countries. Please check before your trip where your child passport is recognized. Use the travel and safety information provided by the U.S. Department of State (DOS) for this purpose.
Responsibilities
You can apply for a passport at the citizens' office in your place of residence. If you have several places of residence, the citizens' office at your main place of residence is responsible.
If there is an important reason, you may also apply for your passport at an authority outside your place of residence. This may result in additional costs for you.
If you live abroad or your passport has been lost abroad, you can apply for a passport at the German representation abroad.
From May 1, 2025, we will only be allowed to use digital photos taken by a certified studio or drugstore (you will then receive a code) or directly at a self-service terminal in the administration office when applying for passports and identity cards. These are currently available at the citizen service center in the Kaiserstraße town hall and in the local government offices in Altstadt, Hartenberg-Münchfeld, and Lerchenberg.
