The total processing time for the application (from submission to implementation) can take up to 3 months. The construction of a property access road requires coordination and, if necessary, approval from other relevant agencies, utility and telecommunications companies, and the authorities responsible for street lighting.
What else should I know?
The construction of a property access road, including any necessary adjustments to the sidewalk and curbs, always requires a permit from the City of Mainz.
Only after obtaining a permit may you construct, modify, or remove a property access road, including any necessary adjustments to sidewalks and curbs. Work in public traffic areas may only be performed by a specialized company licensed by the City of Mainz.
When constructing a property access road, the following measures, if necessary, must be taken into account:
Relocation of existing streetlights, traffic signs, or other obstructing fixtures
Removal of property access roads that are no longer needed
In the event of a subsequent road expansion by the City of Mainz, you are not entitled to any form of reimbursement; that is, no credit will be applied toward road construction fees.
Property access roads without curb cuts achieved through auxiliary components such as steel plates, speed bumps, or by beveling the high curbs are not permitted!
Legal basis
Section 41 of the State Highway Act : You must obtain a permit from the highway authority to construct, modify, or expand a driveway onto public roadways. You may apply for this permit at the City Planning Office of the State Capital of Mainz.
Please note that the building permit applies only to your building lot. The building permit does not include permission to drive across the public sidewalk to the parking spaces on your property. Please also take into account any provisions in applicable zoning plans regarding access roads for your area.
§ 17 State Building Code You must not endanger the safety and flow of public traffic.
Therefore, ensure that necessary distances, turning radii, sight triangles, storage space lengths, entry widths, and gradients are maintained.
We recommend coordinating the planned/required property access roads with the Department of Transportation well in advance of the start of construction.
