Braille for people with visual impairments and sign language interpreters for people with hearing impairments

Decisions and forms issued by Mainz City Council are accessible on request. Documents can be printed in Braille on request; sign language interpreters can also be requested.

Notices and forms in Braille

Blind and visually impaired people can, if necessary, have written notifications, forms, and general decrees sent to them in Braille at their request and at no additional cost. The municipal social services office has the option of printing notifications and forms in Braille free of charge at the State Office for Social Affairs, Youth, and Care. In addition to the respective notice in Braille, the original notice is also sent.

Placement of sign language interpreters

People with hearing impairments have the right to use sign language when accessing social services, especially during medical examinations and treatments. Upon request

, the authorities will provide translation by sign language interpreters or communication aids. This applies in particular to hearing-impaired parents in their dealings with the school authorities. For example, when it comes to the admission of children in their care to school, a change of school, transfer and examination decisions, expulsion from school, or disciplinary measures.

All other events at school, such as parents' evenings, general information evenings, or school festivals, are outside the scope of administrative procedures, but also require barrier-free communication. The costs incurred for sign language interpreters are covered by the state as a voluntary service with a fixed maximum amount as part of a pilot project. The relevant applications and information are available at the schools.

Please note: Sign language interpreters are provided by the integration service of the State Association of the Deaf or the Federal Association for Spoken Language and Integration of Hearing-Impaired People. If hearing-impaired people require a sign language interpreter, they should contact the administration approximately two weeks before the appointment.

In addition, it is possible to have a free video conference call with sign language interpreters at the State Office for Social Affairs, Youth, and Care. In this case, registration should take place about three days before the appointment.
