Within the Building Department, this division performs the duties of the lower-level historic preservation authority. It enforces the Historic Preservation Act of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate within the territory of the state capital, Mainz.
Responsibilities:
- Advising owners of historic buildings
- Conducting approval procedures under historic preservation law
- General monitoring of work on cultural monuments
- Monitoring the state of preservation of cultural monuments.
As part of its coordination with the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments, the department also consults with the municipality regarding entries and deletions in the informational register of cultural monuments of the state capital, Mainz.
Since 2021, the department has been represented in the municipal management group for the SchUM World Heritage Site, which oversees measures related to the Mainz World Heritage Site—the Old Jewish Cemetery on Mombacher Straße.
