In addition to managing personnel operations at the control center, the department is also responsible for ensuring its technical functionality. The telephone and computer systems used here, as well as the radio equipment, must be available at all times and are therefore checked and maintained daily. In addition, vast amounts of data must be entered into and updated on the control center computers—for example, for documentation purposes, for substance research during hazardous materials incidents, or for the visual representation of locations or routes. Alarms from fire alarm systems and fault detection systems, as well as weather warnings and severe weather alerts, are also received here. In the event of major disasters, a backup control center or an emergency command vehicle is activated in parallel with the emergency call center, which can also be staffed by control center personnel.
